If your Windows 10 application works too slow, crashes suddenly, or has other undetectable issues, then you should try using this free official Microsoft utility known as the Process Monitor. With this, you will be able to diagnose and debug any Windows application errors that might be prevailing on your computer.
Download and Installation
The Process Monitor (ProcMon) utility by SysInternals was introduced in 2006. Apart from diagnosing application issues, it also gives visibility into all the registry keys, network traffic, and file system placements.
ProcMon is the most advanced tool to identify troublesome applications or to have a high-level summary of your Windows PC.
You can easily download the tool from the official Microsoft link, it doesn’t involve any installation, however, you will have to agree to the SysInternals software license terms.
Problem Diagnosis with Windows Process Monitor
Once you run the program, you will see numerous rows and columns populating with entries. You get millions of entries suggesting issues with your PC. Fortunately, you have to ignore the rest and worry about the ones mentioned below:
- Process names
- Process ID (PID): a four- or five-digit number
- File path
- Result code: “success,” “name not found,” or “Reparse,” etc.
Step 1: To get rid of the troublesome applications, open the “Tools,” and then “Process Tree.”
Step 2: A dashboard will open up with all the open and running applications in your system. The “Life Time” column in green color usually indicates no issues inside the concerned application. If you are running an updated Windows 10 system, then most of the errors and file health issues won’t trouble you.
Step 3: Move down to the problem event to select “Go to Event,” then go to the issue.
Step 4: Once the problem source is identified, start looking for an option called “Filters.”
Step 5: Select this option to apply the filter. Now, this may take a little longer, depending on the number of entries, a particular filter has.
Step 6: To narrow down the search, you can also exclude results that do not indicate any trouble with the application.
Final Troubleshooting
Below is the process for final troubleshooting for the above program. Ensure that you don’t forget to save the ProcMon file from “File -> Save.” This will help you in the future to look into the system concerns.
Saving the file will also allow you to get back to default settings if you want to. You can do so by simply clicking “Reset” in the file. Now, coming to the troubleshooting process, you will have to uninstall the problematic programs. Uninstalling a program is not as easy as it sounds. But ProcMon has made it easy, by a simple right-click on an option called “Search online,” you will be taken to the uninstall screen.
Just click the uninstaller and the program will be removed completely. We hope that you will now be able to trash away all the errors that were making trouble for you.
